Is cauliflower ear life-threatening?

A cauliflower ear is not life-threatening in the majority of cases. However, immediate surgical decompression of the perichondrial hematoma may prevent further cartilage necrosis (death) and fibrotic scar tissue formation associated with the cosmetic auricular deformity.

Cauliflower ear is not life-threatening. The initial injury to the ear can get infected without antibiotics, which are especially important if you have a compromised immune system. Prompt treatment of a severe ear injury can prevent the characteristic lumpy, misshapen cauliflower ear, but this malformation itself is not usually considered harmful.
