How do medications treat cauliflower ear?

Stuart A. Linder, MD

The major treatment of a cauliflower ear is immediate surgical decompression of the blood or hematoma. Pressure necrosis from the buildup of blood or serum may lead to auricular cartilage death and permanent deformity from fibrotic scar tissue contracture. Oral antibiotics may also help reduce secondary chondritis or cartilage induced bacterial infection.

You may have to take antibiotics to prevent infection, but medicine is not the main treatment. To treat cauliflower ear, your doctor will make an incision or use a needle to drain the clotted blood, then press the skin and cartilage back together with a tight bandage.
