How does cholesteatoma affect the body?


The most commonly discussed result of cholesteatoma is deafness. The cyst created by the disease can eat away at tissue and bone necessary for proper hearing. It can also cause constant ear discharge and/or swelling. However, there are also consequences of the disease that can affect other parts of the body.

  • The face:: Cholesteatoma can damage the facial nerve causing weakness or paralysis of the face.
  • The brain: Cholesteatoma can cause abscesses and infection in the brain.
  • The whole body: Cholesteatoma can lead to vertigo and meningitis, a disease that causes inflammation of the spinal cord and brain.
