Very small acoustic neuromas may not cause any problems. Larger ones affect the body when they press on surrounding nerves related to hearing, balance, and facial sensation. Acoustic neuromas don't affect brain tissue like cancerous tumors do. However, some large tumors may press on the brainstem. This can cause life-threatening complications and should be treated immediately.
