Cauliflower ear is a condition that can occur when a severe external ear injury is left untreated. If someone receives a blow to the ear, it can lead to hematoma (swelling in which unusual amounts of blood accumulate). If the hematoma is not drained by a medical professional, the swelling can cut off blood supply and oxygen to the ear cartilage causing it to die. This deforms the ear and the term "cauliflower ear" relates to its appearance. This condition often happens to those who receive multiple blows to the ears, such as boxers, wrestlers, and rugby players.
