Barotrauma occurs when air pressure inside the ear and outside the ear becomes unequal. If severe, it can result in eardrum rupture. This is sometimes referred to as airplane ear because it occurs often during air travel as air pressure may become unequal during takeoff and landing. Barotrauma also may occur to someone during scuba or deep sea diving.
