Who should take spironolactone?

As a diuretic, spironolactone helps maintain a balance of sodium and potassium in the bloodstream by increasing urination. People who can benefit most from spironolactone treatment are those who have excessive amounts of aldosterone, a natural hormone which regulates levels of sodium and potassium in the body. Spironolactone also has been known to help elevate potassium levels in people with hypokalemia (low amounts of potassium in the blood). Because it helps the kidneys better process liquid, spironolactone reduces the amount of unnecessary fluid the body retains. This can reduce swelling (edema) in people with conditions, such as congestive heart failure, nephrotic syndrome (damage to the kidneys that results in protein in the urine, low blood protein levels, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and swelling) or liver scarring due to cirrhosis. People with high blood pressure may also benefit from spironolactone treatment combined with other medications.
