Who should take hydrochlorothiazide?

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is intended for people with edema (fluid retention) caused by congestive heart failure, kidney disorder, liver disease or steroid or hormone therapy. It also is prescribed to treat adults with high blood pressure. In low doses, HCTZ helps the kidneys remove excess salt from the body and water is removed with the salt. Excess salt causes the body to retain fluid which can leak into different tissues of the body and cause edema. In some cases, hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat edema or high blood pressure in children.
