It is believed that diffuse axonal injury - one type of diffuse brain injury - can contribute to shaken baby syndrome. Shaken baby syndrome, a result of abuse, occurs when babies or young children are violently shaken. The shaking causes their brain to move back and forth within their skull. Shaken baby syndrome can cause death or a host of other complications, including blindness, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, hearing problems, and seizure disorders.
