What is a blood gas test for acid-base metabolism disorder?

A blood gas test is actually several tests done together, usually on a sample of blood from an artery. The tests analyze the  pH of the blood and the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and bicarbonate buffer in the blood. These tests are often used to diagnose acid-base metabolism disorders, and can help identify the type of disorder, if one is present.
