Trypan blue is a sterile solution of a dye that is used during surgical cataract removal. The blue dye stains the tissue where it is applied producing a clear distinction between eye components. This distinction allows the surgeon to easily locate and see the tissue to be removed. Trypan blue is classed as an ocular surgical aid and sold under the name  VisionBlue, and is used only by surgical ophthalmologists.
