What is a critical care specialist?

A physician can specialize in critical care medicine by doing a residency program in critical care.  Often these physicians are also specialists in internal and pulmonary medicine.

Critical care specialist have trained to take care of serious medical conditions and health issues. They often work hand in hand with surgical specialist as well. For example, Liver transplant patients require transplant surgeons as well as critical care specialist to monitor and treat renal, liver, and other bodily functions both prior to and after the transplantation. Neurologist work with neurosurgeons, as cardiologists consult and take care of cardiothoracic surgical patients.

An intensivist (critical care specialist) is another name for a physician with special training who takes care of intensive care patients. Many physicians work in specialized areas like a cardiologist for heart disease or nephrologist for kidney disease. Taking care of very sick patients in the intensive care has become a special area also. Some physicians now train to become intensivists. Other physicians add this to their specialty. For example, some intensivists are pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, nephrologists or cardiologists.
