What is the role of chemotherapy in bladder cancer?

In general, the treatment for bladder cancer depends on many factors such as:
  • Cancer (cell) type; for example, transitional cell, squamous cell, adenocarcinoma
  • Stage of cancer: local, invasive, distant spread (metastasis)
  • Overall clinical health
  • Treatment preferences (to be discussed with your physician)
Chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells. It may involve two or more drugs or drug combinations. Drugs can be given directly into the urinary bladder (through a catheter; called intravesical therapy) or through a vein (called intravenous therapy).
Chemotherapy may be used to shrink a tumor before surgical intervention, after surgical intervention (to control or prevent disease recurrence), or combined with radiation therapy.
