How do other illnesses affect autosomal recessive genetic disorders?

Because autosomal recessive genetic disorders are inherited conditions, they are not contagious. However, some contagious disorders, such as the flu, can make someone with an autosomal recessive disorder very sick, much sicker than someone who does not have this type of disorder.  For example, someone with MSUD (maple syrup urine disease) has caused by symptoms caused by the inability to metabolize branched-chain amino acids, which are found in protein you eat.  If someone has MSUD and then catches the flu they would first become ill with the flu and then be at risk to become even sicker.  This would happen because of the toxic leucine released by the breakdown of protein for fuel while fasting during illness is very dangerous for a person with MSUD.
