Who should take sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan treatment is not for everyone. Do not take sumatriptan if any of the following conditions apply to you:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in sumatriptan
  • You have high blood pressure that is not under control
  • You have serious liver problems
  • You take tryptophan, amphetamine or cocaine
  • You have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine in the past 2 weeks or
  • You have taken other migraine medications such as dihydroergotamine, methysergide and other serotonin receptor agonists such as rizatriptan or eletriptan, in the past 24 hours

Do not take sumatriptan for longer than prescribed for, as this can worsen your headaches. Elderly people should not take sumatriptan, as they have an increased risk of heart complications. Because the effects of sumatriptan have not been evaluated in children under 18 years of age, it is not recommended for use in children.
