What side effects does Topiramate (Topamax) cause?

The common side effects of Topiramate include numbness and tingling in the fingers and toes, suppressed appetite and nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, slower cognitive processing and memory problems. Less frequently kidney stones and acute angle glaucoma can be encountered.

Preliminary data suggests that, Topiramate carries an increased risk of congenital malformations, such as cleft lip and cleft palate. This might be particularly important for women who take Topiramate.
Topiramate can reduced the effectiveness of estrogen containing oral contraceptives due to its effect on liver metabolism. Thus women taking Topiramate and oral contraceptive need to discuss this further with the doctors and to used additional methods of contraception.
