How does divalproex sodium ER treat migraines?

In those with migraine headaches and epilepsy, divalproex sodium ER was shown to decrease the frequency of attacks over a period of time. Divalproex is used to prevent migraines before they occur. This medicine is thought to prevent chemical changes in the brain that cause migraines.
