What is nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin is a prescription antibiotic medication used to treat urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin kills some of the bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
