What are common side effects of theophylline?

Like any medicine, theophylline may cause side effects. These could be mild or more severe. If these mild symptoms don’t go away or if they worsen, tell your doctor. They include:
  • Stomach pain and upset stomach
  • Insomnia or restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
You should immediately call your doctor if more serious symptoms develop. These include:
  • Seizures
  • Skin rash
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular heartbeat or increased or rapid heart rate

Call 911 for signs of an allergic reaction:

  • difficulty breathing
  • hives or rash
  • swelling of the mouth, lips or tongue
