What should I know about praziquantel before taking it?

Before taking praziquantel, tell your doctor if you are taking rifampin, because it may interact with praziquantel, and the use of these medications together is not recommended. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking carbamazepine, chloroquine, fosphenytoin, ketoconazole, or phenytoin, although it may be best for you to continue taking these medications while you are taking praziquantel. You should tell your doctor if you have kidney, heart, or liver disease before you start taking praziquantel. Your doctor may want to monitor your heart while you are taking praziquantel, and moderate to severe liver disease may increase the risk of side effects from the medication. You should also tell your doctor if you have worm cysts in your brain or eyes.
