When children engage in play therapy they are often provided a variety of play materials in a safe and supportive environment. Children may feel less threatened, and be more likely to express their true feelings in the context of play.  Therapists can analyze children’s conflicts and repetitive themes.  By using play, therapists teach children ways of coping with their frustrations and working through their conflicts.

Centenarians I have met take advantage of rejuvenation techniques the Chinese have known for thousands of years, like acupuncture, acupressure and energy healing. These techniques increase energy, promote health, and balance the body and the mind.

If your busy schedule doesn’t leave you much time for vacation, bring the relaxing sounds of the ocean right into your own bedroom. For around a dollar, you can download a relaxing ocean sound online. You’ve probably experienced how soothing the sound of lapping waves can be, but new research shows that ocean sounds can actually slow your breathing and lower your heart rate as your body matches their rhythms, dramatically decreasing stress as you prepare for sleep.

Ethnobotany is a hybridization of plant biology and cultural anthropology which leads its practitioners deep into jungles and across plains to glean traditional medicinal knowledge in a process that is called natural products discovery.

An ethnobotanist seeks out knowledge about medicinal plants from tribes. He or she wants to know what kinds of healing properties a particular plant has, what conditions it can treat, what parts of the plant are used and how they are prepared. The ethnobotanist collects samples for analysis, and, at that point the process goes from the realm of anthropology to the realm of modern chemistry. The synthetic chemist has the challenge of isolating the active ingredients within the plant. Even more important, chemists must find a way to synthetically reproduce the plant's natural ingredients.

Cupping is a common therapy used by acupuncturists and Chinese medicine practitioners. In Chinese medicine cupping is most commonly used in treating various types of pain, although it can also be used with conditions such as coughing or other respiratory problems.

Cupping is generally not the first therapy of choice in Chinese medicine for weight loss, although it is possible it may be used in combination with other modalities. The best option for patients is to consult with a licensed acupuncturist who will evaluate the best methods for treatment. By itself, cupping is not usually used to lose weight.

Cupping does not always cause bruising, although it can. There are two kinds of cupping. One is called sliding cups, where a cup is used to create a vacuum and then slid so it feels like a massage. It is sometimes called massage cupping and is really comfortable. It provides all the benefits of increasing the blood flow and breaking up scar tissue. It has some of the benefits of cupping and some of the benefits of massage.

The other kind of cupping is called stationary cupping, and that’s where a really strong vacuum-like suck is used and leaves darker marks, or darker marks can occur if there has been an injury. The sliding cups treatment is gentler and does not leave dark marks. People should talk to the acupuncturist about these treatment options.

Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine technique used in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance its effect. In cupping, a glass or plastic cup is suctioned onto the body and kept in place for about 10 minutes. This stimulates circulation, relieves swelling, and enhances the acupuncture or electro-acupuncture.

Phytotherapy is the use of plant extracts to treat a medical condition. Some plant extracts have been used for centuries to treat urinary symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Today, there is wide variation in the use of these herbal products around the world. In some European countries -- Germany, Austria, and France, for example -- plant extracts are commonly used as initial treatment for men with urinary symptoms.

Your skin’s sebaceous glands are responsible for producing oil. As you age, they produce less of it and your skin becomes drier. Studies show that lavender oil is beneficial because it hydrates and improves dry or scaly skin.
