Do ADHD symptoms change as a child enters adolescence?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Medicine
As children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) enter adolescence, their symptoms may change. The increased demands of middle school may cause more problems with schoolwork.

ADHD symptoms such as impulsivity and inattention are still there. Adolescents with ADHD are often easily frustrated and may have excessive emotional responses or seem emotionally immature compared to their classmates. In addition, the stresses of the teen years can bring additional disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or disruptive behavior.
