Can watching too much television cause ADHD in my kids?

Dr. Iris M. Rodriguez-Ocasio, MD
According to the book Pediatrics by Osborne, et al, ADHD currently seems to have a multifactorial etiology. Research has not shown that too much television, poor home life, poor parenting, or poor schools cause ADHD. However, these factors may exacerbate ADHD symptoms and impairment.

Research does not support the popularly held views that ADHD is caused by watching too much television, eating too much sugar, parenting pratices, or social and environmental factors such as poverty or family chaos. Of course, many things, including these, might make symptoms worse, especially in certain people. But the evidence is not strong enough to conclude that they are the main causes of ADHD.
