What Is the biggest mistake people make who are trying to lose weight?
Motivation is key to weight loss, but many dieters don't think about that before they start a diet. In this video, Ask the Experts registered dietitian Samantha Heller suggests ways to get pumped up about shrinking your waistline.

The biggest mistake people make when they're trying to lose weight will surprise you. [TRANQUIL MUSIC]
I don't love skipping meals and starving yourself. But really, the biggest secret to weight loss, or making any behavior change, is,
number one, first and foremost, assessing your motivation. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being you just
could give a hoot and 10 being you're so excited, you're so motivated that you can't see straight,
if you're not an 8 on that scale or above, then it's just not the time to try to either start an exercise
program, lose weight, quit smoking, stop drinking, whatever it is because if you're not motivated, you're setting yourself up for failure.
And then you go back to eating more, drinking more, smoking more. And then you feel terrible about yourself. And it's this vicious cycle.
So that's the first step. Am I motivated to do what it takes to accomplish my goal? And if the answer is, no, I'm really not,
there is a second part to this, again, the secret no one tells you. You have to ask yourself, why aren't I motivated?
Why don't I want to lose weight? Why don't I want to quit smoking? Why don't I want to start exercising? And not just, I don't feel like it.
I don't want to. Take it deeper than that. Maybe you don't know how to start. Maybe you don't know what you should or shouldn't eat.
Maybe you're afraid of being hungry or deprived. Maybe you love food, and you're afraid it will affect your social life. So in terms of weight loss, those
are some of the questions that come up. If you can't identify the barriers, you can't find a workaround. Identifying your resistance is going
to be very helpful in helping you make healthy behavior changes. [AUDIO LOGO]
