How can I stretch my upper back?

The question that comes to mind is why are you stretching your upper back? The vast majority of patients I see have muscle imbalances in which the muscles in the chest are tight, with shoulders rounded forward, and the upper back muscles are weak and over-stretched. If that is not the case for you,

How bad is it to sit in front of a computer screen for hours each day?

Sitting all day is hazardous to your health. When you realize just how hazardous, you’ll be jumping out of your chair at the slightest excuse. Good idea. Looking at 8,800 men and women (average age 53) over six years, researchers found that for every hour of TV viewing, risk for death due to cardiovascular disease increased

What should I know about hiking?

“Hiking downhill is harder than going up– I’m always on guard and if there’s any scree, I slip.” says my friend.

“Besides, my back gets tight and sore. If only I could hike uphill for an hour or so, then paraglide down, “she says laughing.

Should I get an MRI for back pain?

    MRI: Not the Whole Story

Since we started using MRI routinely to help treat back problems in 1994, success in treatment actually decreased. How can that be? For most orthopedic pathologies, the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is the diagnostic tool for physicians to determine the existence and s

    What is physical pain?

When I decided to go to physical therapy school, how did I miss the fact that every day I would be discussing pain? I thought about helping people walk and move with ease, but pain never seemed like the biggest deal. Oh, how I have learned!

Physical therapists think about pain and its behavior for

How bad are 4-inch heels for my feet?

We all recoil at the ancient practice of foot binding, right? Description of wrapping girls’ feet in progressively tighter bandages is disturbing. Why would anyone endure such torture? Okay ladies, now open your closet and slip your foot into some undersized, pointy-toed, five-inch heels and you might

How do I stay motivated to exercise?

Just knowing you should exercise, (and there are a million reasons why), does not make it happen. But turning something into a habit is exactly what makes it happen. Like brushing your teeth – do you ever forget to brush before you leave the house? Is it an effort to get dressed? Nope, you always

    How is Achilles tendonitis treated?

Achilles tendonitis is very treatable but takes patience because tendon injuries take 6-8 weeks to heal once all the aggravators are removed. You may not have to stop running but activity modification is very important, as is a slow and progressive return to your prior volume of running. If the pain
