Bio

Debra has been a Registered Professional Nurse for 18 years. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from The State University of New York Upstate Medical University School of Nursing. Prior to nursing, she worked for New York City Emergency Medical Service, and had been a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Currently she is employed at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca New York, working as a Nursing Supervisor and sexual assault nurse examiner at the hospital. She is consulting with Cortland County, assisting them in establishing a Child Advocacy Center. Debra is also a member of Tompkins County multidisciplinary team reviewing child and adult sexual assault cases in the county.

Her professional affiliations include International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). She is one of 18 nurse in New York State who hold certification from them as an Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) and Pediatric/Adolescent (SANE-P) forensic practitioner. She is a member of Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) and board certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN). She is a member of the New York State Emergency Nurses Association Government Affair Committee and a member of the National Government Affairs committee advocating for public policy and changes that support emergency care in the United States. Debra is a member of District 3 Professional Nurse Association where she has function as the chapter secretary. Her work for the district included working with the county legislature, to proclaim “The Year of County the Nurse in Tompkins County”, in memory of the anniversary of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Debra is currently completing a Masters Degree in Nursing at SUNY Upstate Medical Center College of Nursing in Syracuse New York.

    Should I bring the suspected poisonous item to the ER with me?

    Yes you can, as long as it is safe to do so.

    For example, if you have been bit by a suspected poisonous snake---do not go back and pick it up and bring it in! (You do not want to be bit again). Or carrying a leaking toxic bottle of a chemical in your auto would not be safe either.

    A paramedic will focus on safe transportation of the patient from the scene of an accident to the hospital.

    That is a good question. I always think it is the best not to drive yourself.

    1. You have to drive yourself home as well and that may limit the medications we can give you.
    2. If you got dizzy and fell there is not guarantee that it may not happen again and then you may seriously injury

    What vital signs are read on a monitor vary from monitor to monitor and how the nurses have the machine programmed. Generally the monitor reads:

    • Blood pressure
    • Heart Rate, and Rhythm
    • Respiratory Rate

    What if I don't want visitors?

    If you do not want visitors when you are in the hospital let your nurses and the admissions staff be aware of your wishes. Some hospitals have a status called “no-information patient” so you room number will not be given to visitors at the front desk.

    Sometimes a simple note on the door of the room is effective

    Advanced Life Support (ALS) may be available on an ambulance. The ambulance must be equipped with the appropriate supplies, the personal responding must have the proper training and the patient must be in need of ALS level of care.
