Dr. Sklansky's Background

Mark S. Sklansky, M.D. is Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and Professor of Pediatrics within the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Sklansky received his B.A. degree in biomedical ethics from Brown University in 1984, and his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Sklansky then completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (1987-1990). This general pediatrics training was followed by a three-year fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston (1990-1993).

After a year of private practice in Sacramento, Dr. Sklansky joined the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of California, San Diego (1994-2002), where he pursued his passion for the prenatal detection and evaluation of the fetal heart, and where he helped to pioneer the field of three-dimensional fetal cardiac imaging. In 2002, he returned to Los Angeles as founder and director of the Fetal Cardiology Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, dedicated to providing state-of-the-art medical care, teaching, and clinical research for the lay and professional communities. During this time, Dr. Sklansky served as an Associate, then full Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.

Dr. Sklansky has been board-certified in pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics since 1994. He has served as an Associate Editor of Pediatric Cardiology since 1996. An internationally recognized leader in the field of fetal cardiology and fetal cardiac imaging, Dr. Sklansky serves as Vice-Chair of the Section on Fetal Echocardiography of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He has authored or co-authored over 50 articles and chapters in his fields of expertise, including fetal cardiology, three-dimensional fetal echocardiography, general pediatric echocardiography and cardiology, biomedical ethics, and veterinary cardiology.

In his new role at UCLA, Dr. Sklansky will lead the UCLA Division of Pediatric Cardiology in providing comprehensive, collaborative, state-of-the-art and compassionate evaluation and management of fetal and pediatric patients with a wide range of congenital and acquired forms of heart disease. The UCLA Division of Pediatric Cardiology offers a full spectrum of clinical and academic programs, including fetal cardiology, general pediatric cardiology, state-of-the-art cardiovascular imaging/echocardiography, interventional catheterization and electrophysiology, and highly regarded congenital cardiac surgery and pediatric cardiac transplant programs. The Division offers a well-respected formal, three-year fellowship in pediatric cardiology, additional opportunities for basic/bench research after fellowship, and collaborative opportunities for maternal-fetal medicine and radiology fellows and sonographers interested in fetal cardiac imaging.
