Dr Gupta answered our questions in advance, sometimes using computer simulations of the PFO closure procedure on his computer screen. He also answered questions we should have asked, like the risks of the surgery and expected outcome, and recovery. I'm not sure most people could absorb all that as quickly as we did, but he knew my wife (MD) and I PhD) had some experience and had done our homework already. I was not sedated as I had previous experience with nonsedation, and observed my PFO closure from start to finish. I could hear Dr Gupta's team working together efficiently through the 40 minute procedure, during which he spoke with me regularly. I tried to be quiet, but could not resist a few questions to make sure of what I was seeing. I had tears in my eyes when the closure device unfolded and was deployed to close the hole between my atria, my heart beating away the whole time, slowing slightly on each inhalation, for something like the billionth time.
