Two weeks ago I (78-yearold male) fell and hurt my side. As the day progressed, the pain increased. When I got up the next day, my pain had increased even more and my family took me to Providence Saint John’s emergency. Within a short time, I was X-rayed and was diagnosed with six fractured ribs whereupon my Doctor ordered a CT scan of my ribs which confirmed I had fractured six ribs and nearly all of them were displaced (meaning that they were more than a millimeter apart). Some were more than four millimeters apart. I was told that someone from Providence Saint John’s Rib Clinic would visit me. Osita Onugha, MD arrived and explained to me the two alternative treatments. The first was to do nothing and let the ribs refuse together. However the substantial displacement made that outcome unlikely, a much longer recovery period and raised my risk of pneumonia fairly high. He then described a surgery he recommended.
