Mark J. Russo, MD, MS, is an attending cardiac surgeon at the Barnabas Heart Hospital. He serves as Director of the Center for Aortic Diseases and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Research. Dr. Russo specializes in complex and reoperative aortic and valvular surgery. To achieve the best possible patient outcomes, Dr. Russo uses leading-edge technologies, including minimally invasive, endovascular, and hybrid approaches; transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR); valve-sparing aortic procedures; and advanced cardiopulmonary perfusion techniques. Dr. Russo is the most experienced TAVR surgeon in New Jersey and among the most accomplished in the U.S. He is frequently invited to teach transcatheter valve procedures to other physicians. Dr. Russo is also an experienced heart and lung transplant surgeon, participating in over 400 successful organ transplants.A nationally-recognized outcomes researcher, Dr. Russo has authored more than 150 published manuscripts, abstracts, and textbook chapters focused on improving health care quality and clinical outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease. In 2012, Dr. Russo was the 2nd recipient of the annual President's Award from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the largest organization of thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons in the world.Dr. Russo is a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA and received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.
