My husbandDave, and I met Dr Newitt at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh when we went in for what we thought was a feeding tube and most likely a tracheostomy (breathing tube). The young, female physician, Megan, who came in to see Dave, said she thought my he might be able to avoid the tracheostomy - she worked with a doctor who was using non invasive ventilation, would we like to meet her? YES! When we met her we were immediately struck by Dr Newitt’s warmth and kindness. She said that with NIV Dave would have the breathing assistance he needed without having to go through the trach sx. We asked how long before he would need to get a trach? That would depend on many factors including how well he did on it, but if he did well, perhaps a long time. Let’s give it a try! He has done well for nearly 2 years. She is so knowledgeable, helpful and approachable. I can’t say enough about how wonderful she is. She helped Dave and I through these 2 years: always available and supportive.
