What was really killing me: The combination of a sedentary job and an inactive thyroid caused me to gain 100 pounds in 1 year. I had high blood pressure, was borderline diabetic, and even had trouble tying my shoes. I hated myself and was tired all the time. (Check out these sneaky signs of prediabetes.)
My wake-up call: Being at an amusement park and barely being able to get buckled into a ride. I was mortified.
What I changed:
- My attitude and my lifestyle. I finally decided that I needed to take the time to be healthy. I realized that no one else was going to do that for me. The big secret is that you've got to be ready, and really take the time to eat healthy.
- I underwent bariatric surgery.
(See whether you're a good candidate for weight loss surgery.) - I stopped eating fast food while on the road for my job, and now I eat six small meals a day.
(Find out how eating more whole grains can help get rid of belly fat.) - I started focusing on portion sizes. I feel like I can basically eat anything I want, as long as it's in proportion.
(Use these easy cues to serve the right amount.) - I became an avid walker. I go up and down the steps at my office six to eight times a day, and I love to take outdoor hikes, even in winter.
How my life has changed: I was asked to be in a fashion show at the Lancaster Mall, and it was fun. Six years ago, at 300 pounds, no one would have asked me to do this.
How RealAge helped me: By keeping me on the healthy track. The RealAge tips have helped me modify my diet and exercise habits, which has been the key to maintaining my weight loss. I read them every day on my lunch break. (Overcome seven common weight loss obstacles for women.)
What keeps me motivated and on track: I went back to the amusement park to take a spin on the ride in which I could barely fit before I lost the weight. There was half a foot between me and the bar. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Now, I'm determined to maintain my weight because I love my new lifestyle.
What I really love about the new me: Having the energy to run and play with my three grandsons. And at 61, I feel so fortunate to be able to do that.
