Preventing Childhood Obesity Starts With a Healthy Pregnancy

Hi, I'm Dr. Altman, are you pregnant? Congratulations, you can now take steps to prevent childhood obesity for your baby. It's important to do everything you can to prevent weight problems for many reasons including your child's future health. First if you smoke, stop today, and don't go near anyone who smokes either.

Second hand smoke is just as bad. Limit how much baby weight you gain. The healthier your weight during pregnancy, the better for both of you. Extra fat cells in your body during pregnancy, teach your growing baby that extra fat cells are essential for survival and that may encourage obesity.

After the baby arrives, breastfeed for 12 months. It's what the American academy of pediatrics recommends for many health reasons not only will it help your baby avoid obesity later, it will also help you loose weight after pregnancy. Be sure your baby sleeps at least 12 hours a day.

Not getting this much sleep early in life is strongly associated with childhood obesity later. I'm Dr. Altman. For more tips to care for your family, watch all our health smart videos.
