Can Birth Control Reduce My Risk of Ovarian Cancer?

Read Transcript

That's an excellent question, and the answer is absolutely, it reduces your risk of developing ovarian cancer. If you take birth control pills for more than five years, you can reduce your risk by about 50% and that's true whether you have a family history of breast and ovarian cancer, or you don't have a family history, so it works both in people who have certain genetic mutations that put them at elevated risk, and it works for women in general population.

It's something that we as physicians will or are often prescribe for patients for patients specifically to reduce their risk of developing ovarian cancer.
