How to Get a Newborn Baby to Sleep

Read Transcript

[MUSIC] Hi, I'm Dr. Altman. Sleep is a common topic of conversation in my office, especially among new parents. Who won't love a few more of zzzs every night? But the reality is that during the first two weeks at home with your new born, you probably won't get much sleep. In addition to needing to feed every few hours, babies don't know the difference between day and night.

So no matter what time you rest, you need to take advantage and nap too. Initially, your baby will need to feed every 2-3 hours day and night. You can try to help him get on track by keeping night time feedings and changings as calm as possible. As long as your doctor approves, once your baby is gaining weight, don't wake him at night to feed and enjoy the extra sleep yourself.

You deserve it. I'm Dr. Altman. For tips to take care of your family, watch all our health smart videos. [SOUND].
