How Big of an Issue Are False Positives?

They are substantial, we do a lot of biopsies that are normal that some of which then engender unnecessary surgeries etc. However, it is that price you pay for making sure that you pick up cancer early. You can look at a finding on a mammogram and decide to follow it up, and the risk and the benefit, the risk is of course missing in early cancer.

The harms that have been talked about related to biopsies are really not as dramatic as they are for biopsies done in other parts of the body. There is a very low risk involved of bleeding, infection that sort of thing. These biopsies, when done by experienced radiologists are really associated with a pretty minimal risk, the anxiety related to a biopsy is outweighed by the anxiety that a woman has about not doing the biopsy and potentially missing the cancer.
