For the best heart disease care, women need to empower themselves to find out their important numbers, their personal risk factors and their family history. Watch cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, explain why these factors are key for optimal care.
Women really need to empower themselves with information and an understanding of what heart disease is. What we say and go red for women is, know your numbers, know what your risk factors are, know your family history, things like your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, what your body mass index is, do you smoke, do you have diabetes, are you under stress, obesity, do you have a certain trail life style, how healthy is your diet,
talk to your family, find out your family history, and then go to your doctor, and find out all the information you can about your own personal risk factors. When it comes to a heart disease, knowledge really is power.
Suzanne Steinbaum, MD, is an attending cardiologist and the director of Women and Heart Disease of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. She is the author of Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum's Heart Book: Every Woman's Guide to a Heart Healthy Life.
