Routine mammograms are vital to the early detection of breast cancer. In this video, obstetrics and gynecology specialist Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, MD, talks about when and how often women should have the test.
Routine mammograms are so critically important for early detection of breast cancer and to increase good outcomes. But whether or not you should be doing them every year or every other year is a little bit controversial. You definitely need to talk with your own personal physician to assess your own personal risk, your family history, other factors that may contribute but at 40 you should be starting. Some doctors will say every two years from 40-50 and then from 50 on every year, you definitely need to talk with your doctor about what applies to you.
Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, MD, is involved in women’s empowerment and public education. She is in private practice of obstetrics and gynecology in Beverly Hills, CA.
