How Can I Find Out If I Have an Underactive Thyroid?

Read Transcript

The best thing you can do to find out if your thyroid is under-active is to go get a blood test called a TSH. That's the first screening test that we use. Keep in mind though that when you go to your conventional doctor and they measure your TSH there's a range of 0.5 to 4.5 that they consider normal.

This is a very black and white approach to looking at thyroid function because conventional doctors are trained to look at the thyroid as it being healthy or sick. However, there's a gray zone in there and if your TSH is in the zone of 3 to 4.5 that might mean that your thyroid is sluggish and not functioning like it should, and that's the time that you can actually intervene and change your diet, and take some herbs that might help, it might boost your thyroid function so that it doesn't become overly sick.
