What Does My Family Need to Know About My Depression Treatment?

Read Transcript

Family members need to know that depression is a medical illness, and it has mental, physical, emotional consequences, that this is not something a person is doing because they're lazy, this is not something they can snap out of, this is something that needs a lot of support, and patience, and motivation, and that the family member who's ill needs your help, and that may mean taking them to doctor's appointment, that may mean participating in the therapy, and sometimes that may mean making the first phone call to get them the help.

The person who is really depressed has a very difficult time initiating any kind of effort, and that may mean seeking help. So you may need to be instrumental in getting the person to the doctor, and participating in their care, and realizing again that it's not their fault. Depression is not anybodies fault, it's an illness.
