Early treatment and prevention could help change how we spend money on diabetes. In this video, Steven Edelman, MD, director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes, explains where the money goes.
If you look at what we spend taking care of people with diabetes in the United States, it's $230 billion plus a year. The sad state of affairs is this, most of those funds go to taking care of the end-stage complications, heart attacks, strokes, amputations and dialysis. Very little of it goes to drugs, jabs or medical goods and preventative therapies.
So we have our systems backwards. MUSIC].
Steven Edelman, MD, is a professor of medicine in the division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at UCSD and the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System of San Diego and the director of the Diabetes Care Clinic, VA Medical Center.
