What Is Salmonella Food Poisoning?

Read Transcript

Salmonella is a type of bacteria and when you get salmonella poisoning, you can actually develop severe vomiting, diarrhea and a fever that usually lasts 24 to 72 hours. Often it's contracted through contaminated food, raw or uncooked poultry or dairy products are the main culprits for contracting salmonella.

Salmonella can cause you to feel miserable, but it's usually what we call a self limited illness, meaning within a few days it will be out of your system and you'll be just fine. However, for children or for the elderly, any illness that causes severe vomiting or diarrhea can lead to serious dehydration, so at any age if you feel like your risk for dehydration while you are undergoing an illness like this, you should go to an emergency room or see your doctor to get some kind of fluid replacement.
