Emotions play a primary role in binge eating, because most people binge in response to a strong emotion. In this video, psychologist Ramani Durvasula, PhD, explains why identifying emotions that are triggers is key when addressing binge eating.
Emotions play such a primary role in binge eating because most people binge in response to an emotion. And there's a whole range of emotions when we think about them they are usually negative emotions like anger or loneliness or sadness or stress or even boredom and in the face of these emotions, especially if a person's feeling deprived, there's a real temptation to go for a quick fix and attempt to numb those emotions with food.
So binges are often preceded by a strong emotion so part of the key then becomes to identify the emotions that lead you to binge.
