Is Alzheimer's Disease Hereditary?

Read Transcript

There are genes for Alzheimer's disease the name is the Apple E epsilon for a [xx] that is a gene that you could get from mom or from dad and if you have it, it increases your risk of Alzheimer's disease. In fact if you got it from both parents, your risk of Alzheimer's disease is 10 to 15 times more than for other people.

That's not the end of the story though. What this gene does is it makes the protein that carries cholesterol in the blood, so what this also means, is what if I am not eating cholesterol? What if I am not eating the bad fats that are producing cholestrol, we believe that that will alter the actions of this gene.

Meaning the protein that it makes will be less likely to hurt you. So yes there are genes for it, but no genes are not destiny. Doctors contest for the apoli E epsilon 4 allele. It's very easy to do and any doctor can order it but not everybody necessarily wants to get this test because first of all, you can't get rid of the genes.

Secondly, the protective steps a healthy diet, that's really the same whether you have the genes or not.
