Want to enjoy exercise more? In this Health Smarts video, fitness expert Mike Clark, DPT, reveals the secret to more satisfying -- and effective -- workouts: Set your own pace.
Hi, I'm Dr. Mike Clark. There is nothing like an exercise high, and how hard do you have to work to achieve that sense of well being. According to a recent study, setting your own pace is the key to a satisfying workout. In a small study of men and women who were depressed or anxious or both, the group that set there own pace on exercise bikes were the only group to enjoy their workouts.
Amazingly the exercises saw a 30% boost in happiness and well being after only 20 minutes on the exercise bike. But the real shocker, exercisers actually worked harder when left to their own devices, so ignore that drill surgeon aerobics instructor, or bossy exercise body, when it comes to working out, you are in charge.
