Now, once you've lost the weight and achieved your goal and got down to where you need to be, we know from studies that the best way to maintain
your weight once you lose it is to exercise vigorously every day. [MUSIC PLAYING]
Yeah, so working at the North Shore Center for Weight Management, one of the most common things that I come across is people come in
to talk to me about losing weight and weight management and they want to talk about exercise, exercise, exercise. And they really believe that exercise
is the key to losing weight. I think people really like to believe that they could eat whatever they want and lose weight
as long as they exercise every day. And that's simply not the case. One of the things that I tell people when they come in for weight management consultation
is that losing weight is probably 90% of what you eat and how much you eat and only about 10% exercise. And I really believe that to be true.
Now, once you've lost the weight and achieved your goal and got down to where you need to be, we know from studies that the best way
to maintain your weight once you lose it is to exercise vigorously every day. People that have lost weight for 10 years or more
and maintained it typically exercise about an hour a day. They also tend to eat more meals at home than out.
Those are critical things. But that's a little bit different than losing weight. So my message here is, exercise is a very important tool
in living a healthy lifestyle, and it can help you lose weight. But if you really want to lose weight, you really need to keep track of what you're eating
and how much you're eating, the quality of the food that you're eating, how processed it is versus, you know, the more whole grains, the more natural the foods
you eat, the healthier you're going to be. But you really need to limit the amount of food you eat, the calories that you eat.
And that is going to be the best way for you to control your weight. [AUDIO LOGO]
