Many people wake up feeling unrefreshed through that they haven't slept, even though they've been sleeping for seven, even eight hours and there's a couple of reasons why. Number one is they are not getting into deep refreshing sleep, that wake up and feel great sleep. Most people don't know but stages 3 and 4 of what we call deep sleep is that physically restorative sleep.

That's where is growth hormone is emitted, that's where the healing process of sleep occurs. So it's a quality issue, not just a quantity issue. The other thing that's really important is to make it through a certain number of sleep cycles. It's better if you have five sleep cycles, they usually run about 90 minutes, but you can have four, but if you wake up in the middle of the sleep cycle, you can really feel bad.

So have you ever taken a nap on a Sunday afternoon and woken up and felt worse than when you started? That means you woke up in the middle of a sleep cycle and your body really wants you to get back to sleep. It's what we call sleep inertia or sleep drunkenness. What we really want people to do is to either have a 90-minute nap or a 25-minute nap.

That's really what helps them sleep better. So if at night, you realize that your sleep cycle is about 90 minutes, getting about seven and half hours should hit you on five cycles.
