So, first of all it's a series of contractions and relaxations of different muscles starting from your head going all the way down to your toes.
Why is it beneficial? Because it teaches your body how to relax. It distracts your brain from thinking of anything else, and if do it while lying in a dark place you'll probably fall asleep.
