What Are Good Sleeping Habits?

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Michael Bruce, the sleep doctor. There're several habits that I like to tell my patients that I think would be good for their overall sleep. Number one, go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. You don't want to have two different schedules, one during the week and one for the weekend.

The more consistent your sleep schedule is, , the better your body will function. Number two, try to eliminate caffeine by 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Most people don't know, a caffeine has a half-life of between 8 and 10 hours and so that caffeine that you had at 4 o'clock could be having an effect on your ability to sleep, or may change the quality of the sleep that you're having.

Another thing to think about is alcohol. You want to stop drinking alcohol approximately three hours before bed, to give your body a chance to digest and metabolize the alcohol, so that way you don't wake up in the middle of the night either with night sweats or having to go to the rest room.

Remember, everything you do, you do better with a good night sleep.
