You may gain weight on a gluten-free diet if you eat too many packaged foods, which replace gluten with ingredients like fat, sugar and salt. Watch nutrition specialist Melina Jampolis, MD, discuss why you should avoid gluten-free packaged foods.
I see weight gain on a gluten free diet all the time in my practice, one of the main reasons is because it's become so popular there is all sorts of packaged foods that are gluten free. Unfortunately many of them are even higher in calories and then non with free counterparts, they are loaded with fat and sugar and salt and they can easily lead to weight gain, so again at the end of the day, quality of calories does count, but quantity matters to, so if you are eating too many gluten free foods, especially the package once, you are probably going to be gaining weight or the very least not losing weight.
